Royal Canadian Legion Turner Valley Branch #78

With the number of Veterans diminishing each year, our new members increasingly include those solely interested in playing a role in
our community service endeavours. These members not only come from the descendents of our Veterans, but also the community at
large. As well, our Branch serves as the headquarters for the Foothills Lions Club and the Canadian Atomic Veterans Association. As of
the year 2005 we have over 550 members as well as 100 with the Ladies Auxiliary.       In 1991, the closure of the Okotoks Legion expanded our service area. We not only provide financial help within the communities of
Turner Valley and in Black Diamond, but also Longview, Priddis, Millarville, DeWinton and Okotoks. In the past five years, these
contributions have amounted to over $100,000.00.       These donations have helped our three sponsored groups – Turner Valley Gymnastics (sponsored since 1968), First Oilfields Cub and
Scout Troop (sponsored since 1936) and the 2383 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (sponsored since 1965).       Annual bursaries are given to deserving graduating high school students and sponsorship grants are given to students participating in
the annual Royal Canadian Legion Track and Field Meet and the Encounters With Canada program.      We have made donations to our area Seniors in many ways – we contributed toward the building of the Valley Neighbours Club (a seniors
centre) and we also host monthly Seniors dinners, which are very popular, as we have seen an attendance of up to 100 people.       We maintain an on going list of local community groups to which we provide financial support as it becomes available through
our fund raising efforts. Some of the organizations we support are:
  • Alstrom Syndrome Canada
  • Black Diamond Amateur Wrestling Association
  • Black Diamond Family and Community Support Services
  • Canadian Atomic Veterans Association
  • Child Find Alberta
  • Citizens On Patrol
  • D. A. R. E. Foundation
  • Diamond Valley Girl Guides
  • Foothills Cemetery
  • Foothills Regional Victim Services Association
  • High Country Rural Crime Watch
  • Lancaster Museum
  • Leaders of Tomorrow Awards
  • Museum of the Regiments
  • Nanton Lancaster Society
  • Oilfields Junior and Senior High School Fine Arts
  • Oilfields Junior and Senior High School West End Band Program
  • Oilfields Spiritual Care Program
  • Oilfields Sports Association
  • Oilfields/Okotoks Health Foundation

  • STARS Foundation
  • Turner Valley R. C. M. P. Charity Golf Classic
  • Turner Valley Torpedo Swim Club
  • Turner Valley, Black Diamond and Longview Fire Departments
  • Diamond Valley Boy’s & Girl’s Club

In addition to the forgoing, we also have the Poppy Fund (a registered charity), which provides assistance to Veterans when they
are faced with financial difficulties, or when ‘aids to daily living’ are required. The Poppy Funds are also used as follows:
  • British Commonwealth Ex-Services League (Annual donation)
  • Colonel Belcher Care Centre
  • Oilfields Food Bank (Annual donation)
  • Okotoks Interfaith Food Bank (Annual donation)
  • Royal Canadian Legion Alberta-N.W.T. Command Poppy Fund
  • Awards for 22 area schools - annual Remembrance Day Poster and Literary Contest
Branch 78 hosts three parties per year for children (Easter, Halloween and Christmas). These parties are open to the public and are
very well received.       Branch 78 has also hosted many community fundraisers for families that have come under hardship.       We currently hold 11 annual recognition dinners honoring the following: KOREAN-VIETNAM VETERANS, Prisoners of War, Peace Keepers, Air Elements, Sea Elements, Liberation of Holland,
Firefighters Memorial, Tribute to 911 and Salute to America,
RCMP Memorial, War Brides and Women of the War.
These dinners are open to all, so that everyone can honour our veterans and comrades. These dinners and ceremonies
are very moving and educational so we encourage everyone to attend at least one. MAKE CERTAIN YOU BOOK CONFIRMATION PRIOR TO RSVP DATE
